Five-year-old Maya thinks school uniforms are ugly and teachers are silly and doesn't want to start school next year. That's why she constantly fights with her mother. Maya teaches herself to write and read, hoping to escape school. As she observes the adults and the world around her, she writes everything down in her diary.
Stinky, fat Aunty-Chandani is her enemy. Maya steals chocolate from her shop and secretly watches Aunty-Chandani practising undefinable activities with dubious, underworld men. A male child-monk in the neighbouring temple becomes Maya's best friend. Her world breaks apart after finding out her best friend's secret and tries everything to save him. Maya is scared, and when everything seems hopeless, a mysterious wolf comes along to help her.
